Sure, the EIT Digital Master School lets you choose from among the offerings of 15 top European universities and earn degrees from two of them. It also gives you the chance to socialize with fascinating young people from around Europe while networking with the leading corporations.
But after an investment of two years of your time, you want more. You want a transformational experience. You want a launching pad to an exciting new career. You want to be able to walk into a great job. Can the EIT Digital Master programme deliver?
"During my two years with EIT Digital I had countless opportunities to get jobs and start my own company. I was part of several hackathons where companies offered our team to work for them, but also at events at the two universities I had opportunities already," said Leonard Stutzer, who pursued a Masters in Cloud and Network Infrastructures. "Yes, I will easily find a job with the education I got from EIT Digital."
When Bogdan Pop, a recent graduate of the EIT Digital Master School Cybersecurity programme was asked if he was optimistic about his job prospects, he said: "Yes, I am more than optimistic since I was hired just after my internship in the exact domain I was studying for."
Alessio Baccelli, who completed the Data Science Master's programme, had a similar experience. "When I graduated from EIT Digital, I already got a job at the same company where I did my internship for the thesis, so I would say that I did not encounter any problems in finding one," he said.
"I actually found a really nice job," said Gaia Businaro, a graduate of the EIT Digital Master Human Computer Interaction and Design programme. "The EIT Digital programme is something that really differentiates you from other candidates."
The differences between EIT Digital's offering and other Master's programmes was appreciated by a lot of students who took part.
"First of all, you have access to the EIT Digital network, being able to reach universities from all across Europe," said Victor Schmit, a graduate of the EIT Digital Cybersecurity programme. "A single university focuses on the programme THEY offer. With EIT Digital, you can choose from various universities to specialize even more. For example, in my case, I was able to choose the University of Turku for its specialization in Security of Networked Systems."
Students in the two-year EIT Digital Master School choose from among seven technical programmes, each of which is provided by two world-class universities located in different European countries. They spend a year at each school and receive a separate degree from each one. Along with providing technical competence and practical skills that other universities give, the EIT Digital Master School includes training in innovation and entrepreneurship.
Students are automatically plugged into the EIT Digital community, Europe's largest digital innovation ecosystem. The network of more than 350 European corporations, SMEs, start-ups, universities, and research centres, provides valuable connections. Students prepare their master's thesis in collaboration with a company, developing a business plan for the commercial exploitation of their project - essentially a roadmap they could use to launch their own startup.
Bogdan said the connections were an important difference. "Having just the right technical skills is not enough to always find the best job for you. Being part of a big network instead gives you more possibilities," he said.
For Stutzer, the overall experience, including special events and programmes and the chance to develop his own idea, made the EIT Digital Master School worthwhile. He said he would recommend the school to prospective students, for several reasons:
"A dual master's degree programme from two top universities in Europe, a summer school in (possibly) a third country, countless hackathons and opportunities to grow, the opportunity to try out your business idea in a supporting and safe environment, meeting people with the same mindset as you, living in two different countries in Europe for two years. If that doesn't convince you, then it is not for you."
Asked if she would recommend the course to others, Businaro said: "Do it! The more opportunities you create for yourself, the better."
Baccelli answered the question more succinctly: "What are you waiting for?"
