Technology benefits and threats can easily spread across borders. Cybersecurity, for instance, is a worldwide issue which needs to be addressed on a global scale, drawing on the best resources available.

That’s why EIT Digital, the leading organisation driving Europe’s digital transformation, and UC Berkeley, one of the most prestigious universities in the world, are joining forces in a new international collaboration.

The Cybersecurity 360 programme for Professionals, taking place this autumn, will rely on experts from Europe and the U.S. to provide cutting-edge information on the topic through a two-week face-to-face professional training for industry leaders.

The programme is split into two modules: the first one takes place on October 1-5 in Berkeley (U.S.), followed by a second week on October 15-19 in Munich (Germany). Participants can choose to register for one or both weeks.

The EIT Digital Professional School is developing and delivering the European part of the professional training, focusing on cybersecurity for industrial applications - such as manufacturing - to protect networks and connected hardware. The module being offered by UC Berkeley Executive Education mainly focuses on cybersecurity for software platforms, including online and cloud services.

Participants will learn about different kinds of cyberattacks and the risks they pose to their organisations. They will also understand fundamental cybersecurity principles and their application to key technical systems in order to manage security challenges and data privacy.

As an added benefit of having the programme take place in Munich and the San Francisco Bay Area, participants will also be able to attend company site visits, which will include specific “Show and Tell” demonstrations of cybersecurity best practices from each region’s industry leaders.

The collaboration between EIT Digital and UC Berkeley Executive Education couldn’t be timelier, as organisations increasingly discover the price of online carelessness: cyber threats are widespread and failure to prepare can lead to disastrous consequences.

According to the 2017 “Cost of cyber crime” study by Accenture and the Ponemon Institute, the average cost of online crime globally climbed to $11.7 million per organisation, a 23 per cent increase from $9.5 million reported in 2016.

Given the magnitude of the potential impact, it is important that today’s managers possess a significant level of proficiency in cybersecurity in order to safeguard their organisations.
