After the success of the 1st Edition, EIT Digital is kicking off the second edition of the Lisbon Summer school in collaboration with its partners, BGI and ISCTE-IUL. The summer school has the theme Longer Independent Living; Business opportunities and implications of primary prevention. This 2 week summer school began on the 1st of July and end on the 14th of July, 2018. After a thorough but exciting learning experience, students will be required to present their projects via a pitching competition to esteemed and experienced guests on the 12th of July, 2018.
As part of the learning experience students will be given business cases to tackle, of which they are to present on the day of pitching on 12th of July. The cases that would be tackled are as follows:
Physio@Home (Contact: mpacheco@plux.info): The current project proposal aims to develop a solution to extend physiotherapy programs to people’s home as a complement to the sessions performed at the clinics. The solution proposed is based on smartphones or tablets and wearables containing electromyography (EMG) and inertial sensors that will be used to track the execution of the movements and give biofeedback to the user.
SENSEi: Sensi is related to Intelligent Assistive technologies based on biosignals to support independent living of people with motor limitations due to clinically severe conditions, as locked-in syndrome from strokes, spinal injuries or degenerative diseases. The objective of Sensi is to bring freedom of action to all persons that have motor impairments and are dependent on technology for independent living. More specifically, this project will integrate wearable sensor technologies to read biosignals and will develop intelligent algorithms that automatically detect the context of the person and her/his voluntary actions, even with subtle movements. These algorithms will empower the person to have a quick and easy access to digital devices and to the Internet, in order to be independent in performing daily activities, according to the different life contexts.
Kinetikos (Contact: rmatias@kinetikos.io): Kinetikos aims to revolutionise clinical decision-making by assisting to diagnose, analyse and support treatment planning for mobility disorders. Treatment of movement disorders lacks measurements and analyses to describe and understand human movement and its related deficits. Physicians must rely on experience over objective data. Furthermore, when data is available, it is often overly complex, unreliable, noisy and difficult to relate to clinical best-practices.
Brainanswe (Contact: Valente@ipcb.pt): By using emotion tracking proprietary algorithms, BrainAnswer has developed methods to obtain human emotional and physic states when performing one particular task. BrainAnswer started by helping brands and their products better targeting consumer via better ads. During the development of emotional studies, BrainAnswer has found multiple situations where some patterns were more compatible with patological markers instead of emotional ones. Currently it has expand its platform to assist teaching, doctors, patients, communications by providing the platform that allows a good implementation of protocols, measurement mechanisms and accurate and reliable sensors for medical screening and rehabilitation programs.
Home Hospitalisation: Hospitalization is an increasing burden for health care providers. Trends as ageing population place increasing pressure for health care service. Further to ageing health care has witnessed increased costs of hospital treatment with a growing awareness of hospitalization risks (infections, stress, …) which increase hospital stay period and costs. As a consequence hospitals face an average of 9 500 € additional costs, per patient, due to hospital infections raising the stay at the hospital by 20-25 days for each infected patient.
Availing the students with real business cases provides the opportunity to develop real solutions with potential impacts.
What is the Summer School?
The summer school is one of EIT Digitals initiative to tap into and help scale the innovation capabilities of young or budding entrepreneurs across europe. The goal of the School is to give students a real life experience of the challenges entrepreneurs face when setting up a new venture. Furthermore the summer school aims to equip students with business skills In a supported environment - workshops, lecturers, meetings with entrepreneurs, group projects.
EIT Digital's Collaboration
The summer school initiative is one of many other initiatives EIT Digital has started to develop the Portuguese innovation ecosystem. EIT Digital collaborated with BGI to develop a unique instrument called Scale-up Portugal. Scale-up Portugal is currently the most comprehensive and data driven report about the Portuguese startup ecosystem (especially in regards to deep technology startups). This reports identifies the top 25 Portuguese emerging technology start-ups within a 5 year period, and analyses using quantitative metrics, their "recipe for success". The report goes on to compare the Portuguese start-up ecosystem with the global start-up ecosystem, shedding light on gaps and trends. The report also presents the opportunities and challenges in Portugal, especially from the point of view of Portuguese technology start-up founders.
EIT Digital and BGI are pioneering the gathering and interpretation of important data, relevant to deep technology verticals like never before, and thereby promoting positive economic impact in Portugal and other parts of Europe. We have identified a significant gap in the knowledge space within Portugal, and have positioned ourselves to bridge it. What differentiates this instrument from other reports in Portugal is the objectivity, rigour and transparency of our methodology, as well as the series of programs that support it.
