Boogi is a Digital Cities innovation project that facilitates public transport use with a seamless, multimodal mobility service through a pay-as-you-go solution. By only pressing a check-in button, the journey begins, and citizens can focus on their travel and get charged later at the best rate.
Travelling in a big city can be laborious due to many pain points: messy ticketing machines, confusing fare zones with numerous different operators, and ticket purchase is time consuming. This pain is even bigger for not used commuters such as tourists, business visitors, or even inhabitants from the metropolitan area but not specifically from the municipality.
Users want to save time and commute easily without any frictions; Boogi comes into action to simplify their journey. Using a traffic mode detection module, the user only needs to check-in once, travels as many times as he wants, and trips are charged at the best price directly on user’s account at the end of the day. It provides an oyster card-like ticketing system without additional infrastructure. The system is therefore easy to scale, cost-efficient and offers a simple access to the end-users.
By integrating APIs and further data sources, Boogi provides a fully software-based ticketing technology that works as a check-in/be-out solution for public transport and car-pooling. It enables Mobility-as-a-Service in a pay-as-you-go manner, not forcing the user to plan his future mobility demand.
The target users of Boogi are commuters who wish to save time and want to have a personalised mobility experience, using one mobility app with real time information and payment. Moreover, Boogi offers carpooling as a new mean of transport to complete the public transport network for the first and last mile of the trip.
Besides, using machine learning, Boogi offers personalised trip recommendations according to user habits, traffic jam or any unusual events. According to the means of transport you usually use, the transport you are using and the real-time information from the Public Transportation operator, Boogi sends an alert in case of perturbation to provide personalised best mobility solution. Also, Boogi collects valuable data, useful to cities in order to improve infrastructures and services for a higher satisfaction of their inhabitants.
The team is working to deploy the service to the first piloting city in France already in 2018 and integrating the service in the multimodal application Boogi. In 2019, they will scale up to other cities in several European countries.
Stéphane Péan, Digital Cities Action Line Leader asserts: “"Boogi is at the forefront of Mobility as a Service new multimodal applications. The pay-as-you-go approach provides the most complete seamless solution to the market. Today, it clearly improves comfort for everyone. Tomorrow, it will replace the ticketing machines in cities. I am proud to be presenting Boogi at the ITS World Congress in Copenhagen later this year."
Yann Hervouet, Innovation Activity Leader said: “We have brought together energies and talent from different top-level partners to build a simple and practical service that will make life easier for public transport users in all cities.”
The partners involved in this Innovation Activity are: Engineering, DFKI (German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence), MotionTag, OpenMove, and InstantSystem as Business Champion.
EIT Digital's Innovation Activities deliver new products or services, create startups and spinoffs to commercialise outputs from projects, and encourage the transfer of technologies for market entry.
Boogi is one of the 9 Innovation Activities of the Digital Cities Action Line for 2018. This Action Line leverages the digital transformation of the cities through centralised, participative and collaborative interactions between city actors: government, city service providers, industry, and citizens. This transformation enables the deployment of disruptive information, mobility and safety services in the cities.
